Can NovaTuff Coatings’ epoxy roof coating be bought in different colors?

Standard NovaTuff roof coatings area available in white, tan and gray. White is the most energy efficient.

Client asked about the energy rating you get on the epoxy roof?

NovaTuff RC-100 has a solar reflectance of 87% and emittance of 88%. A reflective roof is defined as one that provides at least 75% reflectivity and 65% emittance. NovaTuff RC-100 exceeds both of these standards. My tech data sheet shows these results.

Based on this reflectivity rating, Austin Energy does periodically offer rebates for applying spray-on or paint-on reflective roof coatings. This link discusses the Austin Energy rebate process.

You can also refer to the following article which references a Department of Energy study commissioned to document air conditioning and energy savings when retrofitting an existing building with a reflective roof.

In one of our customers’ recent installations, they used an IR camera to measure the roof temperature during installation of NovaTuff RC-100 flexible epoxy roof coating. On a modified bitumen roof during installation in May 2016, they measured a temperature of 140° F on the uncoated section, and 78° F on the coated section 5 feet away.

NovaTuff can be applied with a brush, roller or spray equipment. Spraying requires a commercial spray rig with 2500 psi minimum and .035 tip.

Installation by a NovaTuff accredited installer ensures that the installer has been properly trained, that the job is done right, and that it can be backed by a NovaTuff warranty.  Contact NovaTuff Coatings for a list of accredited installers in your area.

How much temperature differential will I really see on my roof by using NovaTuff?

The answer comes from one of our Dallas Contractors during a recent coating installation on the roof of a major department store.
The roof substrate was modified bitumen. The coating was NovaTuff RC-100 with full fabric embedded.
The installer stood on the roof during the application of the first coat and fabric and took the following photos. The two temperature readings were about 5 feet apart within a minute of each other. The differential in this situation was over 60 degrees F.

See the attached document for a picture of the area with thermal readings.  FAQ Temperature differential – NovaTuff Roof Coating

Mike, are you saying this epoxy can be applied over wet insulation/substrate?

Dew or light rain will not wash away a fresh NovaTuff RC-100 roof coating nor will it compromise its cure.  But you should not seal in a wet roof structure.  It needs to breath until dry.  Wet insulation compromises the integrity of the building.

What are the advantages of NovaTuff over a “Ballasted Roof”?

White rock is reflective, but if you have a leak you have to take off all the rock to find it. With NovaTuff you have a white reflective roof and if it gets damaged you can find the leak and easily repair it.

Also in hurricanes, roof rock is the primary cause of glass breakage. In some coastal cities ballasted roofs are prohibited.

What is the coverage of NovaTuff RC-100?

Coverage depends on the substrate.

Metal roofing requires 1 gallon per 100 square feet (typically in a single coat).

Most other roof systems require 2 -3 gallons per 100 square feet.

What is the cure time for NovaTuff?

NovaTuff reaches its full cure after 7 days at 80 degrees F. It can typically be walked on after 24 hours.

What is your warranty on the product and policy?

Which airless machine and tip size do you recommend to use with NovaTuff products?

Use a commercial spray rig with a 35 tip (.035”) and at least 3000 psi and 2 gpm minimum flow rate. Pump size needs to be high enough to maintain pressure when you are working with long hoses, multiple guns, or from the ground with high head pressure. An inline transfer pump can assist in maintaining pressure. Ensure that pump is fitted with solvent resistant hoses, seals and fittings.

Please refer to this Application Equipment Data Sheet for more information.

Will my new white NovaTuff roof really stay bright white?

The answer comes from Best Materials LLC, our online distributor..

Hello Mike,

We have seen some amazing results with the NovaTuff 100 product. We did a section of our existing white warehouse roof seven years ago. The standard elastomeric roof coatings turn off white after about 6 months. The NovaTuff product stays bright white, year after year. On our roof, we just applied the 100 as a finish topcoat.

We would like to finish up the roof someday….

I think one key thing to document is its ability to STAY white. It repells dirt for a LONG time.

Will NovaTuff RC-100 stick to TPO?

NovaTuff RC-100 will adhere well to aged “more than 5 years old” TPO. Conduct a pull test.

Sometimes it is necessary to patch or tie into new TPO. Sanding the surface will provide a profile for good adherence to new TPO.
